It was good to have paid for an upgraded room as a special treat. The level of design and finish was excellent. Having a room at the side overlooking the canal the view was lovely and the room quiet. The beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was equipped with both bath and shower, there being both overhead and hose options with excellent water pressure in the shower. Negative: Having only a small wash hand basin in the bathroom meant using the two large wash hand basins in the bedroom. For shaving, the lighting within the two very very expensive mirrors was really not bright enough for that function.
Amsterdam working break
We booked last minute and paid quite a high rate. We stayed for two nights (Friday & Saturday) arriving late on the Friday hoping for a good nights rest ready for our busy working day on the Saturday. The room was small and at the front overlooking the fountains, but it was modern and clean. Alas no sleep at all on the Friday night as the room was so noisy!!!! Tired and fed up we went to reception in the morning to see if we could be moved.....they did move us to the back of the hotel on the top floor which was a very old fashioned room however thankfully it was quiet in there!! I do think they should warn you of the noise and lack of sound proofing - if it was purely a trip for pleasure then maybe this is acceptable but we went to work and felt let down.
A very nice hotel, even though it was recommended by my ex 😆
I’m a little late in writing this review, but am in a TripAdvisor rabbit-hole at the moment. This hotel is on canal, with a canal tour boat dock right outside the door. It’s also an ideal location to walk to tourist destinations such as the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and Heineken Experience. (Of course, if it’s raining, your taxi fare will be negligible from any of these destinations. Just make sure your driver knows that a metal post comes out of the ground after dark and they’ll have to dial the hotel to have it lowered, or they may crash into the post and give you whiplash on your vacation. The American Hotel offers 24/7 taxi service if you want to avoid any potential mishaps like that). The rooms are absolutely beautiful, each one with a different theme for decor, and some with nice balconies to relax on after a long day of sightseeing. The connected bar/restaurant is absolutely gorgeous. Words cannot even describe, so I’m attaching a picture. Do yourself a favor, and say here on your next stopover in Amsterdam!
