Great location but terrible service
I would never return to this hotel. I found the reception personnel to be unwelcoming and unhelpful with two exceptions. The breakfast is mediocre. I chose the hotel for its central location and it was well located as advertised.
This hotel is located near everything. We walked or took the tram to many sights. The employees were very kind and helpful. We liked staying here. The restaurant was very vintage with lovely decor. The food was good.
Attractive hotel on the canal
Rooms are a bit larger than average in Europe, and you don't have to lug your own bag upstairs, the adjoining American Cafe with its chandeliers and views is wonderful (though the food is only average), but some of the rooms can be noisy at night.
We checked in and were greeted happily by a very nice young representative at Hotel American Amsterdam. After that, it all went down hill. Construction (power tools, drills, etc) started bright and early, every morning, at 8:00AM local time. The walls were about as thin as paper, so we heard pretty much everything; including all of the construction and our neighbors whom, most likely, filed for a divorce upon arriving back in the US based on the arguing we heard. By far, the worst part of our trip was the fact that we were awoken at all hours by either construction inside the hotel (during almost prime tourist season) or our neighbors screaming a chorus' of F bombs. The bathroom in the room was dreadful, and water from the shower head sprayed all over the floor because there was only half of a door on the shower. A piece of the floorboards in the room fell off during our stay, and the housekeeping staff left it there. Housekeeping was substandard, lacking to refill coffee/creamer. Also, there is very poor lighting in the hotel hallways and rooms in addition to very dark room decor (black curtains). We loved Amsterdam but no thanks to the hotel and will not be staying here again when we make our way back to Amsterdam. This hotel did nothing to prove itself as a "4-star" establishment, and the only reason that I can imagine them having that designation is due to a lack of other hotels in the area.
Actualy, when I was booking hotel, I wanted to have right location, so I can easily come from airport as well as reach city center from it. American Hotel is exactly that. But, beside that, this is a beautiful buliding decorated with high trees and fontain in front of it and illuminated during the night. Many people take picture of it. Rooms are cosy and clean. Breakfast includes all the food that you need and, which is the best, it takes place in a such a beautiful restauranf - for me the nicest spot of the whole hotel. I made 1000 photos inside. Stuff is very warm and kind especially those at the reception desk. I highly recommend this hotel to stay in Amsterdam!
